Asleep at the bar
I keep an eye on the unusual couple in the corner
A fetching and vexing woman
An inappropriate man trying to take advantage of her

Repeated escape attempts are abandoned
As they lose each other in bypassing conversation
Erratic ringing of cellphones
Break the occasionally rising tension
Their drinks grow thicker in the awkwardness that never heals
He grows more restless as the evening's metronome
Drive them forward and beyond
Her victory is dawn's discovery
Satisfied I peel myself from my seat
And head home
