My Blog - Inspired By My Pictures

Years ago I heard the advice, "Don't take pictures while on vacation, just focus on the experience."  This turned out to be terrible guidance for me.  In my late 30s I started taking more pictures.  This activity helps to cement memories that would otherwise be lost whether on vacation or just going somewhere on the weekend.  In this blog I share the memories and stories inspired by my pictures.

Matzenbach, Germ.

My darling;

Another day and nothing new happened to me. An officer came over from the 440th today and said both Maye and Farrell had gone to a replacement depo. And they were doing everything they could to get reassigned to the 440th. But so far no luck.

I’m afraid things are going to declare all B.C. essentials and not let them come home until there unit comes. Nothing official on that.

Betty some Senators or even your mother’s favorite representative of her district should get ahold of this demobolization mix up. Betty if only they would come out with something definite for everyone. At the present we still have officers in this Battalion with 110 points, and the highest score for E.M. is 82. Honey we sure can’t figure it out.

Betty how much money do you get monthly from my allotment. You should be getting $250.00. I’m checking up on this, just in case something is wrong.

Everyone is getting terrible. Today we have a pair of 10 ounce binoculars out watching the couples walk back to the woods. It is so damn obvious what they are going into the woods for.

Be good darling - I love you so much.

All my love

Jack

My darling;

I finally got some mail. Your letters of 10th, 12th, 14th & 16th. Every other day. I sure glad I got some cause I'm blue as I can be today. Thanks a lot for the pictures.

Today I did my first good days work in quite a while. I took a convoy of trucks and got 23 ton of coal. I sure hope this isn’t too much of an indication of winter occupation for us. From what I am told I won’t come home before the 3rd leaves and I’ll be accompanying them on their return trip.

You asked me the name of the river in those last pictures. It the Neckar. It runs through Heidelberg and that is the name of town in the picture.

I was surprised that you got the book “Forever Amber” In desperation to have something to do I read a little of that book. I gave up where Bruce shipped out and Amber was in the prison for debt. At that time I became so disgusted with the immorality of the book I gave it up.

Those packages I sent you were not intended to be presents or anything like it. It was just extra equipment I did not need. You said I sent you book ends. I sure don’t remember that. In regards to the stop watch, as you call it, it was made for me by a man named Wynn and it was a present to me. I have another like it with me, which I’m using.

We can’t wear coveralls anymore. Have to wear Class B uniform all the time and i just had too many handkerchiefs so why not send them home.

Betty, there just isn’t any thing to do. I’ll be so very very glad to get home to you. Be good.

All my love

Jack

P.S. I have yet to receive a letter directly to the 391st.

Matzenbach.

My darling:

I sure wish I had something to write about. But there just isn’t one single thing to say. I’ve just laid around the last two days, except for this afternoon. I went to division and saw “Ship & Field” Program. It lasted for an hour and wasn’t too bad a program either.

Honey the last letter I have from you is the 8th of August and as there isn’t anything happening and you can’t find out anything. I just don’t have anything to write. We are all sweating out coming home or occupational duty. As yet we haven’t been told what to expect. If they would only tell us something everyone would feel better. They have officers still in this Battalion with 110 point. So my 74 sure looks small. And the enlisted men are over all between 60 point & 83 points. So you see this redeployment gives the E.M. the break, but I’m not going to hold that against them.

I sure hope I get to come home.

Betty I’m going to close. You know exactly what is on my mind. That is all I can think of now. Right now the army is “Kaput” as far as I'm concerned. Be good -

Do a little praying to get me home!

All my love

Jack
