My Blog - Inspired By My Pictures

Years ago I heard the advice, "Don't take pictures while on vacation, just focus on the experience."  This turned out to be terrible guidance for me.  In my late 30s I started taking more pictures.  This activity helps to cement memories that would otherwise be lost whether on vacation or just going somewhere on the weekend.  In this blog I share the memories and stories inspired by my pictures.

My darling:

Only a short letter tonight. And most of that will be about our move. We left Frankfurt at 08:30 Sunday morning and came down here a distance at 150 miles and arrived here by 7:00 P.M. last night. There wasn’t a single event on the whole trip. This town is south of Crailsheim which is north east of Stuttgart. Hope you can find this on the map.

Betty I’m having so much more happier time in this battery than in Headquarters 489th. It is a relief to get away from a headquarters. I sure don’t miss Shirley or Milner. Schwarz is very happy too.

Our house we are in isn’t very good, so we found a new one in town this afternoon, so we are moving into this house tomorrow. The main reason for moving is that the house has running water and a bath tub. Well tomorrow we will know if we made a good deal or not. I’ll let you know.

Well Janey if the Jap’s should give up I should get out of the army. How do you feel about it all. Please write and let me know just what you think about your after-war plans. Please.

Well good night honey. Please be good and I sure wish I was going to bed now - with you.

All my love

Jack

South of Frankfurt

My darling;

Do you think the war with Japan is over. I hope so. Then I can come home to you. Return to normal life. And if this war is over, and I return to civilian life I’m going to be a father soon, and you a mother. Now isn’t that right. This time you better answer this question.

A few pictures I took in Heidelberg, you have the negatives at home.

Betty I am so much happier in this battery. The officers are Capt White, Battalion Motor officer, a Lt. Paris, Lt Merret, Schwartz, Harmon and Hall plus Shelton & myself. A lot of officers but none of them run around in German girls except George. So it makes a good group each night.

It is rained for four straight days now and we are supposed to move Sunday down near Hall, West of Heidelberg.

Be good darling, I love you so much, I should love to hold you tonight. I bet I dream of you tonight, I’ve thought of you so much -

All my love

Jack

South of Frankfurt

(I’m closer to there now)

My darling;

Remember I said the 391st wanted a supply officer, well I’m it. I was transferred to them this morning. So my new address is Service Battery, 391st A.F.A. Battalion, A.P.O #253. Geo Schwarz is in this battery and many of my men are here too, so actually honey I like it much better than the 67th Field.

Yesterday I didn’t do anything until the evening, when they had an officer party at the 67th. At the event they showed the show “Something for the boys” It was a very poor show. This morning I spent reading American History, for want to do something. At eleven I was called in and told to report to the 391st. So this afternoon I spent doing that.

This evening Captain Shelton and myself went to the show. Saw “When the Angels Sing” It seemed to be a better show than last night, but still not to very good. Betty Hutton made this whole show.

Well darling this is about all for now. I’m so happy to get away from Headquarters. It is always something around there, Now I’m in Service I got my own men, responsible only to me, nobody else. And with Russia fighting Japan and the new Atomic Bomb, things can’t last too long. Be good darling - I love you so.

All my love

Jack

I’m writing this sitting in a soft chair and it makes my writing worse. You can send packages to me again.
